Contributing writer Austin gives his take on fashion careers and education!

No matter what’s going on in other industries, the fashion industry seems to be recession-proof. And as a result, job prospects in fashion and retail are looking up this year. For people who want to make fashion a career, that means the future may just look a little brighter.

But creating a career in fashion requires building a solid educational foundation. Creating an educational roadmap is the best way to do it. From clothing design to marketing and buying, there’s a program out there that’s tailor-made for your future career.

Find your passion
The fashion industry isn’t just garment designers and stylists: it takes thousands of people, doing dozens of different jobs, to make fashion work. Before you decide on a degree program, do a quick self-inventory of your strengths. Do you have a knack for bargain hunting? Perhaps becoming a buyer for clothing companies or a personal shopper could be in your future. Are you fascinated by how garments are made? Graphic design or textile construction could be a good choice for you. Once you identify your gifts and your interests, you can start to evaluate the various degree programs that will help you find a career in the fashion industry.

Styling the right education
The business side of fashion is just as important as the creative side, and earning a business degree could give you some serious street cred in the industry. It’s not uncommon for freelance artists working on their own collections, or models who want to learn more about the business side of the industry, to consider returning to school. An online MBA program could give you the edge you need as well as the flexibility to work on your own projects. Degrees in marketing, graphic design and even textile design could help you shape the career you desire.

Getting your well-dressed foot in the door
Internships are an integral part of many degree programs, and while they’re fiercely competitive, they’re not out of your reach. If you’re an artist, make sure you have an online portfolio of your work, so potential employers and internship managers can view your talents. An online portfolio can work for business and marketing majors as well. You can display some of the projects you’ve worked on while earning your degree. Be sure that your online portfolio includes a resume and contact information.

You can also search for internships on your own, using sites like Internships.com or by consulting with your school’s career center. Finally, landing an internship is sometimes about who you know; so do some networking among fellow classmates, faculty members and people in the industry.

Fashion is serious business, and a solid education is the best way to make your mark in the industry. Having a clear idea of your career goals, as well as knowing what you love doing, can help guide you toward an exciting and fulfilling career.

1- How did you get into fashion? Tell me how and when everything started.

The fashion industry has always been something I was interested in.  When I finally decided to pursue my dream of working within fashion there were no opportunities available at the time. This is when I decided to create my own opportunity and launched my own company Manchester Public Relations. My first official clients were Kathi Chandler and Alison Robertson-Boris of Ally Kat Style and I honestly I couldn’t have asked for a better pair of women to work with.  We grew together and learned a great deal from one another.

2- When did you first know that you wanted to be in fashion?

I have never had the talent to create beautiful pieces of clothing or jewelry.  However I love fashion, especially how it can be a form of artistic expression.  With my background in public relations and my fervor for fashion I decided to start freelancing as a fashion publicist.

3- If you weren’t in the fashion industry, what would you like to be doing?

Hmmm, that’s a good question.  I use to want to be an actress but I think I would have been the most camera shy actress out there.  I love jobs that drive creativity and allows you to think non-traditionally as well as outside the box.

4- Tell us about your fabulous blog and what products or serviced do you offered?

I wanted to add a blog element to my website so that I could offer the opportunity for my readers to become more familiarized with me as well as the fashion and pr industry.

5- How would you describe your personal style?

My style has definitely changed over the years, I think your style says a lot about you and can change just like your personality can.  Just to name a few things I adore: silky lightweight blouses, statement jewelry and I am also big fan of layering.  Living in the New York the weather is very unpredictable so layers are perfect for the fall and spring months.  I pretty much love everything!

6- Who is your favorite designer/Brands?

LaRok, House of Harlow 1960 and Ben Sherman just to name a few. I also really love discovering emerging designers, which is part of the reason why I launched my company.

7- If you had a choice of all designers in the world, whom would you prefer to work for? Why? I would have to say Rachel Roy.  I love her work and through candid interviews she seems extremely down to earth and a pleasure to work with.

8- Are there any special projects you would like to work on?

I have a to-do list that is mile long!  Doing public relations opens your eyes and a world of different professionals.  I am looking forward to meeting new designers, boutique owners, photographers, bloggers etc…  I hope to continue to expand my network and meet more emerging designers.  Each designer that I have met has had a story to tell and it really makes the encounter interesting when their designs are close to their hearts.

9- Which magazines do you read? Which magazine is your favorite?

InStyle, Lucky, Gotham, Fitness and Self.

10- What do you see in stores that you think is really great?

Again, I love everything!!! Let me see the other day I saw fantastic faux leather purse which was extremely affordable and big enough to hold just about anything.  There is a weekender that I have been eyeing for a while that I just love by Tarah Smith!

11- What motivates you?

Women that I have met from day to day are really a driving force.  It’s easy to lose your way and become discouraged so it’s nice to see other women starting from scratch and making their company a complete success.

12- What’s next for you?

I will continue to grow Manchester Public Relations and perfect my craft as a public relations professional.

13- What do you do in your down time?

I love working out and challenging myself it’s a great way to relieve stress.  I am also big TV and movie junkie.  My DVR just does not have enough space!

Big thanks to Nadia Murdock for taking the time to talk to Unik Apparel Style!
