Do what you love: Vanessa Kuo of Smashion

Vanessa Kuo

Smashion is a social fashion site that features a free marketplace connecting buyers and sellers with a passion for fashion I interviewed Smashion’s Marketing Director Vanessa Kuo to learn more about Smashion and the growing popularity of the site!

1. How did you get into fashion? Tell me how and when everything started.
I first became interested in fashion in high school and I devoured fashion magazines any chance I got. At that time, I never thought I’d work for a fashion company though. It wasn’t until grad school when I interned for a company that planned shopping events for fashion-focused shoppers and had to deal with fashion designers on a daily basis, that I realized I really enjoyed working within the industry. Then I just sort of fell into Smashion.

2. When did you first know that you wanted to be in fashion?
Before I graduated from grad school, I started looking for jobs that were fashion-related. I knew that I couldn’t draw or design to save my life, so I applied for fashion marketing jobs. Smashion brought my two loves together – business and fashion.

3. If you weren’t in the fashion industry, what would you like to be doing? I’d probably be in advertising.

4. Tell us about your fabulous store and what products or services do you offered?
Well, Smashion isn’t a store – it’s a no-fees fashion marketplace and community that connects sellers and buyers with a passion for fashion. We’re different from other fashion marketplaces in that we don’t charge our sellers or buyers any types of fees and we allow everyone to leave their listings up indefinitely. The site is our response to the growing trend in wearing second-hand clothing and the lack of a community-based, fashion-focused online marketplace where fashion-conscious individuals can make the best use of their wardrobe. We want to help fashionistas recycle preloved items.

5. How would you describe your personal style? Classic and feminine.

6. Who is your favorite designer? Love, love Vivienne Tam.

7. If you had a choice of all designers in the world, who would you prefer to work for? Why?
Definitely Vivienne Tam. As an Asian-American, I appreciate that she uses Eastern inspirations as a muse when creating her clothing.

8. Are there any special projects you would like to work on?
I’d love to have the opportunity to help her market and further establish her brand identity in the US. Heck, I’ll settle for answering her phone just so I can work for her.

9. What do you do in your down time?
I try to catch up with all the fashion blogs I have in my Google Reader, but it’s almost impossible. I follow over 200 bloggers and they’re all so good at updating!

10. Which magazines do you read? Which magazine is your favorite? Love Marie Claire!

Anything’s possible! Who knows…

Do what you love: Clouds Couture

clouds couture logo

1. Tell me how and when everything started.

Clouds Couture was inspired after years of wearing flip flops that were uncomfortable, unsupportive and unhealthy for my feet. As a native California girl, I lived in flip flops all year long and was constantly in search of a pair that would comfortably take me from the pool to a casual night on the town. In 2009, after a long day of walking the Las Vegas Strip in a pair of well broken in wedge flip flops, I was left with blisters and very sore feet. That was it!

Upon my return home, I sought out to design a versatile sandal that would be comfortable, stylish, and supportive, yet priced for a broad range of pocketbooks. I found myself tearing apart my wedge sandals, and used materials from around my house and the local drug and fabric stores to design the prototype for my new comfortable wedge flip flop. That’s when Clouds…”The Ultimate Pillow-Soft Flip Flop” TM were born.

2. When did you first know that you wanted to be a business owner?

I have been in entrepreneur since 1993 when I opened my own mortgage company. As a single mother of four daughters, I needed a career that would provide me flexibility- a job that would allow me to work at any hour of the day/night. After 17 years and the housing bubble crisis came crashing down on all aspects of the real estate industry, it was finally time for me to pursue a passion I have had for a very long time….. designing shoes, handbags and clothing.

After almost two years in the R & D process, we finally found the right combination to create the perfect flip flop. It has been a rewarding and long journey from my first prototype, to creating our logo, starting a website, receiving our first sample and our first large shipment of inventory. I am now looking forward to designing more shoes, sandals, and slippers with comfort, style and versatility as the main focus! We will also compliment this with apparel in the future.

3. If you weren’t in the retail industry, what would you like to be doing?
I am very excited to explore the creative side of my brain after many years working in the numbers oriented business of the mortgage industry.

4. Tell us about your fabulous store and what products or serviced do you offered?
Currently, we are launching our “Ultimate Pillow-soft Flip-Flop.” Clouds Couture Bahama 1 ½”, Monaco 2 ¼”, and Saint Tropez 3” “Pillow-Soft Flip Flops”, use ‘memory foam insoles, a NASA-created cushioning that retains 95% of its resiliency even after years of wear, and moisture-wicking Cuddle Fleece that is soft to the touch, yet can sustain wear and tear. Clouds Couture flip-flops are affordable for any budget and are machine washable. Fashion and function should translate into what women have wished for since shoes were invented: Style that’s comfortably sexy, day and night. Clouds Couture delivers comfort, style and versatility with a unique design in a wedge flip flop.
From the moment you slip your foot into this luxurious flip-flop, you’ll think you are walking on “Clouds.”‘

5. How would you describe your personal style?
I would say that I dress comfortably fashionable, as I love soft and cozy fabrics, but I want to look stylish and fashionable. I love yoga pants to wear to run errands in or lounge around my home, but I will throw on a cute pair of jeans and a sexy top to hit the town! I created this comfortable flip flop, so I could wear it any time of day or night, no matter what the occasion or location!

6. Who is your favorite designer?
I have a wide range of favorite designers. As far as clothing, I usually shop at Nordstroms, Victoria’s Secret, Cache, lulu lemon, and Bebe’s. As for evening attire, I love St. John suits and little black dresses for those fancier business/cocktail parties as they are all timeless pieces. For my business suits, my wardrobe consists of majority of Armani and Prada. My favorite pair of shoes are definitely Prada pumps. I really love Chanel and/or Gucci handbags and sunglasses. My favorite designer dress in my closet is designed by Nicole Miller.

blue wedge sandals

7. If you had a choice of all designers in the world, who would you prefer to work for? Why?
Since we are now in the shoe business, I would love to work with Christian Louboutin. They really have perfected the “perfect pump” and I would love to see the manufacturing and marketing processes within their company. I love how they have the signature red under every heel!

8. Are there any special projects you would like to work on?
There are many projects I would like to work on. I would love to get into every realm of the shoe business- sandals, slippers, boots, pumps, etc. I would love to create handbags, accessories, and eventually clothing that will be based on my love for soft fabrics, stylish prints and patterns, and versatile style.

9. Which magazines do you read? Which magazine is your favorite? I really enjoy reading Self, In Style, Women’s Fitness, Elle, Vogue, and the Victoria’s Secret catalogue. I also like to read People, to see what the celebrities are wearing. I would say my favorite is In Style, as they seem to have fashion that is easy for everyday people to wear and they are current on the latest trends.

soft pink sandals

10.What do you see on stores that you think is really great?
One thing that I love to see in stores are tops or bottoms that can be worn in many different ways if you mix and match with other items of clothing. For example, black leggings are really hot right now. You can either wear them with a long shirt, a dress, with a sweater, t-shirt, or sleeveless vest and it looks like a new outfit every time. I really also love boots. I have always been a fan of a high heel, but today there are so many flat or low heel boots, and they are so much more comfortable than those tall stiletto boots.

11.What motivates you?
I am driven by the reward of success and hard work. It is about pursuing something, I never dreamt was possible, but now here I am, designing shoes and learning about this whole new world. I am also motivated by people that have worn our shoes, that say they love them and they are amazed how comfortable they are… that means I did my job well. The second focus of Clouds is to give back. We are creating a Non Profit Charitable Organization called “Clouds all over the world”! We will be working to create a safe, happy, peaceful and sanitary place for children in orphanages to live and be educated.

We are hopeful that we can assist in placing these children in loving family environments. As a single mother of four daughters, I have focused my life on making sure these human beings that I brought in to this world have every opportunity to create a happy and rewarding life. I have also instilled upon them to also give back.

12. What’s next for you?
We are really looking forward to the next product launch. We are working on a comfortable platform pump with the same ideals in mind that we used for our “pillow-soft flip flop”- comfort, style versatility and we will work with quality fabrics and materials to create our vision. Then hopefully, we can work on the next chapter- boots, clogs, handbags, apparel. As far as the charity, I have identified our first orphanage to assist, Cate Academy. They are in desperate need of building a proper building for the living facilities, classrooms, bathrooms and kitchen facilities. I would love to see this task be accomplished by 2012.

13. What do you do in your down time?
There are many things I do in my down time. I love to spend time with my family, anything active or outdoors- skiing, wakeboarding, hiking, working out, meeting interesting people, enjoying a glass of red wine or two, traveling, and challenging myself on new projects

Do what you love: Ally Bu

ally bu tote

Ally is a hot mama, accountant during day and the designer/owner behind Ally Bu. This gal has the full package brains and beauty! Get your favorite tea and keep reading!

Tell me how and when everything started.
I have been sewing since I was 10 years old. My father is a retired tailor so I suppose it came to me naturally. I’ve always been interested in fashion and finding ways to get it on a budget.

When did you first know that you wanted to be your own boss?
When my children were small, I wanted a way to be able to work from home. That’s when I decided to turn my hobby into a business and started a custom window treatment business. It wasn’t until several years later that I heard about Etsy, which has enabled me to market my products worldwide.

If you weren’t a business owner, what would you like to be doing?
I am an accountant as well as purse designer/business owner. In my day job, I am controller for a software development company. While I enjoy accounting, it’s not a profession that encourages creativity. My business is what I would be doing full time if I weren’t an accountant.

ally bu handmade hobo bag

Tell us about your fabulous store and what products or serviced do you offered?
In my shop, I offer handmade fabric purses, totes, hobos, messenger bags and accessories. Every bag is designed and personally made by me.

How would you describe your personal style?
I would describe my personal style as sensible chic. I love to mix affordable pieces with accessories that transform an outfit from ordinary to show stopping. I love color which is apparent in all my bags!

Who is your favorite designer?
I don’t have a single “favorite” designer. I like pieces from Ralph Lauren, Prada, Dolce and Gabbana as well as Donna Karan. I’m not a “cookie cutter” type of girl so I don’t adhere to any one designers fashion philosophy. I’ve been known to buy pieces from Target as well as Saks.

ally bu print hobo bag

If you had a choice of all designers in the world, who would you prefer to work for? Why?
There are so many fabulous designers with a wealth of knowledge to share, however, at this point in my life, I really prefer being my own boss.

Are there any special projects you would like to work on?
I am always adding new bags to my shop. I believe it’s important to be aware of changing trends and to be able to adapt I’ve contemplated getting back into the home décor end of fashion which is really where I began.

Which magazines do you read? Which magazine is your favorite?
With a full time job and a business, honestly, I just don’t have time to do much reading right now. I do occasionally enjoy Instyle, Harpers Bazaar and Lucky. I prefer magazines that reflect mainstream fashion options as opposed to “haute couture”.

ally bu color handmade hobo bag

What do you see on stores that you think is really great?
I’m always drawn to accessories. Jewelry, scarves, etc. I constantly find myself rummaging through the accessory racks looking for that unusual piece that makes an outfit pop.

What do you do in your down time?
What down time??? LOL I enjoy getting outside and digging in the dirt and working in the yard. We recently bought a new home and it is an ongoing process putting our own stamp on it. I also enjoy visiting friends at the lake or just curling up on the couch and watching a movie with my family.

What motivates you?
My motivation doesn’t come from any one place or thing. It may come from a new piece of fabric, a custom order from a client or just a thought that popped into my head during my morning workout.

What’s next for you?
Who knows??? Stay tuned!

Do what you love: Samantha Stewart of Smelly Shoes Vintage

SSV Shoes

Samantha and I met over twitter. She’s owns S.S.Vintage a clothing and accessories online shop.  She lives in NY and loves her boyfriend, vintage clothing and fashion, kittens, funny movies, coffee, and rap music. She shares with Unik Apparel readers her Etsy journey and cute kitties. Get your favorite coffee and read on!

Tell me how and when everything started.
I first signed up for Etsy about four years ago. At first I sold my own handmade items in Lucys Postcard Quilts a shop I share with my friend, Sally. Everything from sewing, knitting, needle felting, and doll clothes to jewelry making and fabric postcards. Sally and I both really loved the Etsy Shop format, and the community.

Then, about a year and a half ago I was noticing how popular vintage items we’re becoming on Etsy, and I love thrifting, so I opened up S.S.Vintage. I had no idea how it would go, or what vintage I would be able to hunt down in my area, and I was nervous I might not even sell anything! My first idea was to have a shop full of vintage shoes and nothing else. I think it was a week (or less!) before I decided there are too many awesome vintage goods out there to only focus on shoes. The more you look for vintage the more you find amazing pieces you can’t possibly leave behind, and the store has been constantly expanding since it opened!

When did you first know that you wanted to be your own boss?
I don’t ever remember a time when I didn’t want to work for myself! Even when I’ve had other jobs (and I’ve enjoyed some of them), I always daydreamed about working for myself, from my home, one day.

If you weren’t a business owner, what would you like to be doing?
I always thought it would be fun to be a librarian. Or I would like to take photographs professionally!

SSV As a Kid

Tell us about your fabulous store and what products or serviced do you offered?
My store is on Etsy, and it’s called ‘Smelly Shoes Vintage’! I started out selling Vintage shoes and clothing, and have expanded to vintage jewelry and accessories like sun glasses, purses and belts. I also have unique old cameras, toys and dolls, even some house wares! I currently have over 400 vintage items for sale.

The largest section in the shop is the Vintage Jewelry and Accessories section. If you need costume jewelry, a new brooch, a gift for a friend, or a unique piece of jewelry for that special outfit, you have to come see what’s at The S.S. Vintage!

How would you describe your personal style?
I’m currently having a lot of fun with some 80’s styled items! T-shirt’s that hang off one shoulder, side pony tails, and bangle bracelets! When I’m home, I’m more about comfort! Tank tops, clothes I steal from my boyfriend (My favorite!), hooded sweatshirts, a very casual style.

Who is your favorite designer?
I don’t really have one designer that I would call a favorite! (That’s so boring, I know!). I don’t follow all the right fashion news and runways. I like to choose what I wear and accessorize with on a piece by piece basis. I like a mix of vintage and new, designer statement pieces and basic staples. A mix of bright and bold with neutral and natural earth tones.

SSV Ferragamos

If you had a choice of all designers in the world, who would you prefer to work for? Why?
Another boring answer, but I really don’t know! Anyone that would teach me how to incorporate vintage style with new fashion. Someone who also wouldn’t mind taking on a total novice of an apprentice! :)

Are there any special projects you would like to work on?
I just purchased my first DSLR Camera. My main project right now is learning the camera, and practicing taking photographs.

In the future as far as The SS Vintage goes, I started a blog for the shop www.SmellyShoesVintage.BlogSpot.Com, I’d love to find someone to model my vintage wares and I’d love to team up with some other vintage sellers/bloggers so I can host some giveaways/features on my new blog.

Which magazines do you read? Which magazine is your favorite?
Well, the only magazine that I get delivered currently is ‘FIGHT’ Magazine! My boyfriend and I both like MMA (and UFC), and that’s the one magazine we have a subscription to. I read an occasional ‘Rolling Stone’ here and there, and if I see a fashion magazine laying around I’ll always flip through it. There is so much information online now, so many blogs and news articles, I usually get most of my information this way instead of purchasing lots of magazines.

What do you see on stores that you think is really great?
I love when I see a real person model in a store instead of clothing just on hangers or even a dress form. It always makes me wish I knew some boys and girls nearby that I could get to model for the shop, or some friends that would let me take their picture!

I think it’s really great too when you’re buying vintage if you can read a little bit of history about that piece or brand while you’re shopping! I like that kind of information.
SSV Persian Kittens
What do you do in your downtime?
Listen to my iPod as much as possible. I love taking pictures and photography, watching movies and spending time with my boyfriend, chasing around and taking care of our new pair of persian kittens (And spoiling them like crazy). My Boyfriend is a chef, and we’re foodies and love to cook, try new restaurants/foods, and actually have a Food blog just for fun! (FoodCameraBlog.BlogSpot.Com). I love to travel whenever I have the opportunity.

What motivates you?
The desire to keep my etsy store going and to keep selling vintage, so I can keep working for myself. I feel like I have the best job, and I want to make sure I can keep doing it!

Other vintage/fashion sellers and bloggers are a real inspiration to me too. They are doing what I’m trying to do! Selling vintage they’ve thrifted, putting in long hours with lots of creativity and energy, and making it into a full time job!

Finding a new fun treasure at a thrift store or antique shop gets me excited oftentimes too and I come home motivated to add lots of new things to the shop and show off the new finds!

What’s next for you?
I’m working on starting a SSVintage Blog! Also, we’re doing a huge rearrangement and remodel of our apartment. That’s totally exciting and on an Etsy related note, I’m going to work on a new space/area for everything vintage and etsy related. More organization means I can keep on expanding!

Thanks to Samantha  for sharing her story! You can visit her Shop, Twitter, Blog and Facebook for more info.

Do what you love: Andrea Haynes of The Bubble Bistro

andrea haynes

I had the pleasure of meeting Andrea over Facebook. She is the owner of The Bubble Bistro a specialty bath and body boutique. This chic mama of three enjoys the entrepreneurship freedom. She loves the simple fact that her children have their mother available and accessible to them, yet still being able to pursue her personal dreams and ambitions. Get your favorite coffee and read on!

Tell me how and when everything started.
Spun from a personal hobby of making pampering body scrubs and indulgences, I discovered a problem that needed to be fixed. Problem: Too many overpriced, falsely advertised as natural, chemical filled products! And the products that are natural and/or organic were extremely unaffordable for those who deserve the pampering the most: everyday people: moms, dads, kids, teachers, seniors…ordinary people with ordinary incomes. Solution: The Bubble Bistro, an independently owned luxury bath and body maker with a simple concept: everybody deserves the “good stuff”. My husband pursued a career opportunity in the Virgin Islands, which took me out of my career. Instantly created was the opportunity to bring The Bubble Bistro into fruition in 2008. By spring ’09 the original St Croix store was open, and this summer our 2nd location is opening in Memphis, TN.

When did you first know that you wanted to be your own boss?
Somewhere around age 10/11 I knew I wanted to own my own business. I had no clue what I wanted to do, but knew I was crafty, artsy, bold, fearless, and kinda like a maverick. My first business, some may remember when this was in and I’ll be telling my age, was custom painting artscapes and scenes on denim jeans. Some were extreme iron-ons and others were “Andrea Exclusives” but earned a hella-lot of cash to be 12 that fall.

If you weren’t a business owner, what would you like to be doing? Easy, getting ready to own a business!

Tell us about your fabulous store and what products or serviced do you offered?
The Bubble Bistro is a concept, specialty bath and body boutique bringing to market Handmade Skin Food, prepared fresh and made from scratch infusing natural, locally grown, and exotic ingredients from all over the world, all at an affordable price yet excelling in quality to all things compared. A very personable shopping experience, we aim to know each and every customer on a 1st name basis, besides how many people can shower and say they know exactly by whom, when, where, and why the product they’re using was made and most importantly EXACTLY WHAT’S IN IT! Education is a key component because an informed consumer can completely change the game vs. these giant, chemical makers.

How would you describe your personal style?
Abstract and Unconforming. I love bold handcrafted jewelry; it makes an outfit speak. I’m a wide-leg, parachute pants kinda chic that’s not afraid of color and panache. I’m 6 ft tall without shoes, so pants are a BIG deal. The perfect leg widths and lengths will determine if I’m going to by 1 pair or 10 pair of the same style.

Are there any special projects you would like to work on?
Business Mentoring/Apprenticeships to Teenagers, Decreasing Carbon Footprints for the business, Education Grants, Local Collaborations and Joint Ventures.

andre haynes bubble bistro

Which magazines do you read? Which magazine is your favorite?
In regards to Mags, I’m strictly a foodie: My favorite is Cooking Light, always a great read, educational, and engaging

What do you do in your down time?
I love cooking, spending time with my family, and lastly something you would probably think I do all the time, but in my spare time, I love to go into my lab and create something just for me. It is the absolute hardest thing to accomplish because I always want to add it into the product line and share it with our customers.

What motivates you?
The perfect work-life balance! I’m purely motivated by the simple fact that my children have their mother available and accessible to them, yet still being able to pursue my personal dreams and ambitions without the constraints of “corporate America” or 9-5+ hours.

What’s next for you?
Stability and Controlled Expansion of The Bubble Bistro, then take one of my other business babies into incubation and development.

Thanks to Andrea for sharing her story! You can visit her Shop, Twitter and Facebook for more info.

Do What You Love: Johnson Sarkissian

jsdance

Today’s feature comes from Robert Johnson and Katherine Sarkissian. Together they make up the photography team of Johnson Sarkissian. They are photographic storytellers working with a variety of media from digital stills to video to motion picture film. Their aim is to tell their client’s story; whether it is high-end advertising, editorial, portraiture, or events. Read on!!

How did you get into fashion? Tell me how and when everything started.

We originally began our photography career as photojournalists – working as freelancers for the New York Daily News as well as other newspapers and magazines. After a few years of mostly street shooting, we went to film school in California (Brooks Institute of Photography) where we earned our BFA degrees. Upon graduating we began working in Hollywood on feature films and video production, and eventually we returned to NYC and began assisting established photographers – Annie Leibovitz and Neil Slavin amongst others. As we assisted more and more fashion photographers we began to realize just how much fun it is to photograph top-of-the-line clothing on top models!

When did you first know that you wanted to be in fashion?

We are first and foremost people photographers –we’ve always felt that the connection for us is about the person. Photographing beautiful people wearing great clothing is a bonus. We spent 12 years in Italy and really discovered fashion there – as well as great food and vino! We thought we were only going to be there for 6 months but we loved it so much we stayed 12 years!

If you weren’t in the fashion industry, what would you like to be doing?

We will always be visual artists. The camera is wonderful tool with which we tell our stories, and today with technology progressing at such an amazing clip, our careers are taking us on an amazing, exciting new adventure where things are possible that just a few short years ago we couldn’t have imagined!

jsmissoni2

Tell us about your fabulous services and what services do you offered?

We’ve recently returned to our roots and have begun shooting video along with our still photography work. It’s a wonderful way to really tell the story in depth, often in the subject’s own words. We’ve had the good fortune of late to work with some really talented artists – we’ve just completed a music video and are in production on a family documentary.

How would you describe your personal style?

Our personal style is about connecting with our subjects to bring out their personality; what is uniquely them. Our roots in photojournalism help us to keep it simple and to capture moments as they unfold before us. Above all, we try to keep the process fun for everyone involved.

Who is your favorite designer?

We love the Italian Designers. For us, the Italian sense of style is without compare whether it is shoes, handbags or clothing. The impeccable tailoring and luxury of the Italian brands is a pleasure to photograph — and to wear!

jssuit

If you had a choice of all designers in the world, who would you prefer to work for? Why?

We’ve always loved photographing Dolce & Gabbana clothing. Its fun, edgy and sexy. Dsquared2 – both the Men’s and Women’s clothing – are chic, glamorous and sexy. We also love photographing Missoni because of the wonderful weaves of the fabrics. It’s fun to juxtapose the intricate patterns of the fabric with natural settings.

Are there any special projects you would like to work on?

We see ourselves more and more combining our still photography with video work, and moving into short films and documentaries.

Which magazines do you read? Which magazine is your favorite?

We’re both big readers, and not of just fashion magazines. We draw from wide sources of inspiration ranging from Popular Science to National Geographic to Italian Vogue. to W magazine.

What do you see on stores that you think is really great?

We love the new Apple Ipad – the possibilities it presents opens up a whole new world for digital artists such as ourselves. It’s potential is amazing – whether it is how we present our work or how it enables us to quickly access visual ideas while on location.

jsarmani

What motivates you?

Art motivate us. We go to museums and galleries as often as possible. People on the street motivate us – people-watching can be an amazing experience. Films motivate us – especially documentaries, and we love foreign films. And children motivate us. Their unbridled joy at discovery is a constant source of inspiration to us.

What’s next for you?

More image-making in a variety of media.

What do you do in your down time?

Photograph people!

Their websites, www.johnsonsarkissian.com and www.intuimagery.com feature their still photography work. Their motion media will soon be added to their websites.

1.  How did you get into fashion? Tell me how and when everything started.
After undergrad, I worked in advertising and after six years in the business, I decided I wanted a change. I moved from Chicago to NYC and went back to school at Parsons The New School for Design studying fashion design. From there, I immersed myself in everything fashion including, styling, writing, event planning and sales (tradeshows, sample and showroom). My experiences has been invaluable and I continue to learn more each day.

2.  When did you first know that you wanted to be in fashion?
Probably during the midst of my advertising days. I always entertained the idea, but after going to a Big Ten Midwestern school, the natural step was to get a good job in my major which I devoted the past four years of undergrad to. About 2 years after working, I just got the itch to do it and it took some time to make the move, but I think I made the right one.

3.  If you weren’t in the fashion industry, what would you like to be doing?
Well, I’d be working in advertising or marketing still. I love the industry and people and do love those Mad Men like scenarios that the business carries. Really though, I’m a concepter I love strategies, ideas and executing them. Fortunately, I get to use those same skill sets in fashion.

Studded_Circle_Nailhead_HeabandT

4.  Tell us about your fabulous store and what products or serviced do you offered?
I recently started a collection of luxury headbands and hair accessories that I design and hand make in NYC. The are simple,  elegant and make the a right statement, but also sophisticated. I’m a firm believer that every outfit should have a dominant piece. Whether it’s your shoes, bags or hair accessories, it’s important to make yourself stand out.

5.  How would you describe your personal style?
My style is two fold: Relaxed for work, skinny jeans, cotton tops and pieces to move and run around the city in. I live in Tom’s, Converse and Vans. For dress up, (when I get a chance), I love to mix it up with bold colors and shoes that make me tall. I love shoes!

6.  Who is  your favorite designer?
I have 3 favorite designers that work with my aesthetic:

Missoni: because of their use of bright colors and and amazing patterns

Oscar de la Renta: because of his classic and timeless elegance

Yigal Azrouel: for his modern aesthetic mixed with beautiful fabrications and his ability to drape pieces into stunning garments.

headband_spike_header

7. Are there any special projects you would like to work on?
For my headbands, I’d love to make some one off pieces that are a bit more bold and non functional. Perhaps for a costume and editorial.

8.  Which magazines do you read? Which magazine is your favorite?
I read them all. InStyle, Vogue, Glamour, W, but my favorite is Women’s Wear Daily. In this business, you have to know trends, business information in all sectors. WWD is my go to for this as they go in-depth about the business!

9. What do you see on stores that you think is really great?
I am a lover of shoes. So, every season I get a thrill going to the major stores to see what’s new on the market. Louboutin, Chanel, Giuseppe Zanotti. I practically fall in love with anything that has a bold color. Surprisingly, I only own one pair of black heels because I always buy something bright and well, not that “practical”

10. What motivates you?
Well, I get bored easily. As in, I can’t sit still. So, to conquer boredom, I stay motivated. Now, what inspires me, is a few things: The people in NYC, every neighborhood has it’s own style and look. I love people watching. I also think it’s important to look at all types of people. I think some of my biggest inspiration are styles from small kids on the subway…they’ve got imagination and start a lot of trends.

11. What’s next for you?
Keep on developing Raymond & Agnes!

12. What do you do in your down time?
Well, not sure if there’s down time in the city, but if I had to say one thing it’s dinner with friends and cupcakes. Lots and lots of cupcakes.

1- How did you get into fashion? Tell me how and when everything started.

The fashion industry has always been something I was interested in.  When I finally decided to pursue my dream of working within fashion there were no opportunities available at the time. This is when I decided to create my own opportunity and launched my own company Manchester Public Relations. My first official clients were Kathi Chandler and Alison Robertson-Boris of Ally Kat Style and I honestly I couldn’t have asked for a better pair of women to work with.  We grew together and learned a great deal from one another.

2- When did you first know that you wanted to be in fashion?

I have never had the talent to create beautiful pieces of clothing or jewelry.  However I love fashion, especially how it can be a form of artistic expression.  With my background in public relations and my fervor for fashion I decided to start freelancing as a fashion publicist.

3- If you weren’t in the fashion industry, what would you like to be doing?

Hmmm, that’s a good question.  I use to want to be an actress but I think I would have been the most camera shy actress out there.  I love jobs that drive creativity and allows you to think non-traditionally as well as outside the box.

4- Tell us about your fabulous blog and what products or serviced do you offered?

I wanted to add a blog element to my website so that I could offer the opportunity for my readers to become more familiarized with me as well as the fashion and pr industry.

5- How would you describe your personal style?

My style has definitely changed over the years, I think your style says a lot about you and can change just like your personality can.  Just to name a few things I adore: silky lightweight blouses, statement jewelry and I am also big fan of layering.  Living in the New York the weather is very unpredictable so layers are perfect for the fall and spring months.  I pretty much love everything!

6- Who is your favorite designer/Brands?

LaRok, House of Harlow 1960 and Ben Sherman just to name a few. I also really love discovering emerging designers, which is part of the reason why I launched my company.

7- If you had a choice of all designers in the world, whom would you prefer to work for? Why? I would have to say Rachel Roy.  I love her work and through candid interviews she seems extremely down to earth and a pleasure to work with.

8- Are there any special projects you would like to work on?

I have a to-do list that is mile long!  Doing public relations opens your eyes and a world of different professionals.  I am looking forward to meeting new designers, boutique owners, photographers, bloggers etc…  I hope to continue to expand my network and meet more emerging designers.  Each designer that I have met has had a story to tell and it really makes the encounter interesting when their designs are close to their hearts.

9- Which magazines do you read? Which magazine is your favorite?

InStyle, Lucky, Gotham, Fitness and Self.

10- What do you see in stores that you think is really great?

Again, I love everything!!! Let me see the other day I saw fantastic faux leather purse which was extremely affordable and big enough to hold just about anything.  There is a weekender that I have been eyeing for a while that I just love by Tarah Smith!

11- What motivates you?

Women that I have met from day to day are really a driving force.  It’s easy to lose your way and become discouraged so it’s nice to see other women starting from scratch and making their company a complete success.

12- What’s next for you?

I will continue to grow Manchester Public Relations and perfect my craft as a public relations professional.

13- What do you do in your down time?

I love working out and challenging myself it’s a great way to relieve stress.  I am also big TV and movie junkie.  My DVR just does not have enough space!

Halloween

Today’s, Do What You Love feature comes from Moe Murdock. He is a Digital-Design-Illustrator, (an Electronic Artist) living in the Jersey City area. He is passionate about beefing up his art skills and is also passionate about Donkey Kong. Read on!

Moe

How did you get into art? Tell me how and when everything started.

Well, I have always been artistic. When I was little I would ask my father (who is actually a good artist himself) to draw various pictures for me. It would always be a superhero or a comic book character of some sort. Then when he was done, he would give it to me and then I would draw all over it. Adding my own touches. I guess that it’s always stuck with me.

When did you first know that you wanted to be artist?

That was more recent. I think that I always had the artistic inclination, but never really acknowledged it until now. I think that I have now hit the fork in the road, and I have decided to embrace what has always been there. It’s about time that I did that, and own that creativity.

If you weren’t in the art industry, what would you like to be doing?

Trying to get into it….that was me a few months ago. I am glad that I am not there anymore and that I have a clearer focus of where I want to go.

Escape From New York

How would you describe your personal style?

Well, I am experimenting with a lot of different tools. There are the traditional tools such as pen and ink and paints, and then there are also the digital tools, like computer software and various programs available. I never went to school for art, so a lot of what I am doing is self-taught, or things that I have picked up by experimenting and so on.  It never really stops because you can basically try something new and find an entirely new direction to express yourself. I plan on taking classes soon, as this will be a way to build on my skills some more and go from there.

Who is your favorite artist?

There are a ton. I am a fan of various comic book artists. I think that if I could ever do what they can do I would be super happy! Hopefully it will come with time.

If you had a choice of all the artists in the world, who would you prefer to work for? Why? I think that in a perfect world I would work with Drew Struzan. He is the artist who painted and designed the majority of movie posters for movies that I grew up with. Goonies, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Star Wars. He’s an amazing iconic painter.

Are there any special projects you would like to work on?

I am a fan of comic books, and movies and sci-fi. If I were able to do character design or creative design for movies, films and video games, that would be really awesome. That might be my dream I think.

Christine

Which magazines do you read? Which magazine is your favorite?

My favorite magazine is “Wizard”, which is a comic book and pop culture art magazine. I also thumb through “Sketch Magazine”, and another magazine called “Rough Sketch”.

There is also another magazine called “Illustration Magazine” which I will probably start to read as well. On top of that I also read various blogs of other artists to look for hints and tricks to improve on my style.

What motivates you?

I am pretty self motivated and disciplined. However when I have a tough day at work, or if I am feeling low of creative energy, I look to things on my walls (posters, etc.). I also look at other things that are visually stimulating, well as comics and movies and other things that I draw inspirations from. I also go to museums, and look for interesting exhibits and other creative events. There are things all over NY as long as you keep your eyes open.

What do you do in your down time?

Oddly enough I barely have any. Well, I guess that’s not completely true. I am always trying to keep productive and move myself forward. However sometimes you got to take a break every now and again. I usually relax with video games, catching up on tv.

Reading. Sometimes I just need to step away from the computer and get out and see something other than what I am working on. That way when I come back I am recharged and ready to go all over again.

What’s next for you?

My focus now is going to be improving my skills, taking a class, and standing ready to embrace opportunities that may come my way.
