Contributing writer Austin gives his take on the best trends for the fall semester!
The weather is turning crisp and chilly, and fall’s right around the corner. Fall also means it’s back-to-school time, and it’s time to think about your back-to-school wardrobe. This season, the trend is comfort and casual style with just a touch of dressiness. Whether you’re returning to high school for another year or heading to a college campus, having the right pieces in your closet can help you build several great-looking ensembles for the fall semester. Below are four must-haves that will keep you comfy and chic this season.
Fall for great leggings
Leggings are a versatile garment for fall—you can wear them under a short dress for a little extra coverage, or with a big sweater and boots for a trendy, laid-back look. Choose several neutral colors, like black, brown and beige, so that you can wear them with several outfits. Banana Republic has a great selection of leggings this season, with different lengths and textures to match your dressy and casual looks.
Dress up with a long blazer
Instead of spending hours choosing what to wear to class, use a long blazer to make a simple outfit a little dressy—pair with leggings or a skirt for an outfit that will translate well for a date or going out with friends after class. Wearing a blazer to school can also give you a preppy look—and you can push up the sleeves for a trendy 80’s look. With one or two long blazers in your closet, you can spend more time focusing on your education instead of your wardrobe.
Boyfriend jeans
Dressing well doesn’t mean you can’t be relaxed: the right pair of boyfriend jeans can be both flattering and comfortable. Slightly oversized and low-waisted, boyfriend jeans go great with a cable-knit sweater: a perfect outfit for those chilly autumn days. For days when you’re just going to class or heading to the library to study, boyfriend jeans will keep you comfy and stylish without too much fuss.
Combat bed head with a beanie cap
You can skip doing your hair—and add a little flair to your ensemble—by wearing a slouchy beanie-cap. Wear it to keep your head warm as the weather turns frigid, and as a snappy accessory to tie your outfit together. You don’t have to tuck your hair into the hat; you can let it peek out and create impromptu bangs to frame your face. Buy two or three in different colors, so that you can have a hat to match every outfit throughout the season.
For most students, buying every item of clothing you want is out of reach. But with these four pieces to augment the fall clothes you already have in your closet, you’ll have a wardrobe that’s perfect for school and beyond. Of course, you can mix and match each of these items for new and exciting looks—and don’t be afraid to add some of your own favorite pieces for your own distinctive autumn look.

A sweater dress is so versatile it can be used as work wear, brunch with the girls, or even for a night hanging out at home. Throw a jacket over the dress and look polished, yet super comfortable. This fall fashion staple is the easiest dress to style!

Since it is Friday, which is usually Date Night in my house, I decided to share my favorite date outfit. I was inspired by this black and white dress from Stella McCartney’s ready-to-wear Spring 2012 Collection. I style this look with orange peep-toe heels and a playful blue clutch, which give this looks a sexy and classy vibe. Perfect for a romantic date on the town!
Whatever you have plan this weekend remember to have fun with your look and most importantly have a great time. Have a lovely weekend, lovelies!
