Fashion Education: Trends for the Fall Semester

Trends for the Fall Semester

Contributing writer Austin gives his take on the best trends for the fall semester!

The weather is turning crisp and chilly, and fall’s right around the corner. Fall also means it’s back-to-school time, and it’s time to think about your back-to-school wardrobe. This season, the trend is comfort and casual style with just a touch of dressiness. Whether you’re returning to high school for another year or heading to a college campus, having the right pieces in your closet can help you build several great-looking ensembles for the fall semester. Below are four must-haves that will keep you comfy and chic this season.

Fall for great leggings
Leggings are a versatile garment for fall—you can wear them under a short dress for a little extra coverage, or with a big sweater and boots for a trendy, laid-back look. Choose several neutral colors, like black, brown and beige, so that you can wear them with several outfits. Banana Republic has a great selection of leggings this season, with different lengths and textures to match your dressy and casual looks.

Dress up with a long blazer
Instead of spending hours choosing what to wear to class, use a long blazer to make a simple outfit a little dressy—pair with leggings or a skirt for an outfit that will translate well for a date or going out with friends after class. Wearing a blazer to school can also give you a preppy look—and you can push up the sleeves for a trendy 80’s look. With one or two long blazers in your closet, you can spend more time focusing on your education instead of your wardrobe.

Boyfriend jeans
Dressing well doesn’t mean you can’t be relaxed: the right pair of boyfriend jeans can be both flattering and comfortable. Slightly oversized and low-waisted, boyfriend jeans go great with a cable-knit sweater: a perfect outfit for those chilly autumn days. For days when you’re just going to class or heading to the library to study, boyfriend jeans will keep you comfy and stylish without too much fuss.

Combat bed head with a beanie cap
You can skip doing your hair—and add a little flair to your ensemble—by wearing a slouchy beanie-cap. Wear it to keep your head warm as the weather turns frigid, and as a snappy accessory to tie your outfit together. You don’t have to tuck your hair into the hat; you can let it peek out and create impromptu bangs to frame your face. Buy two or three in different colors, so that you can have a hat to match every outfit throughout the season.

For most students, buying every item of clothing you want is out of reach. But with these four pieces to augment the fall clothes you already have in your closet, you’ll have a wardrobe that’s perfect for school and beyond. Of course, you can mix and match each of these items for new and exciting looks—and don’t be afraid to add some of your own favorite pieces for your own distinctive autumn look.

What are your back-to-school must-haves for this Fall semester?

Happy Weekend!

Look of the week: beach fun
The look of the week is inspired by summer. How I love summer. The best thing about living in San Diego is that the weather stays warmer longer, which means beach days are still come. This weekend, I want to spend it out shopping, swimming and best of all having some margaritas at the beach. What are your plans this weekend? Whatever they are have fun and enjoy the sun!

Unik Fit: Butternut Squash Carrot Ginger Soup Recipe

whole foods market
Chef Ali Smith of the Whole Foods Market @ 97th street shared her delicious recipe for Butternut Squash-Carrot-Ginger Soup at the Graceline Court’s New Year’s Resolutions Pop-Up Event.  Take a look at Ali’s recipe below!

Butternut Squash-Carrot-Ginger Soup Recipe:
-1 medium butternut squash, peeled, seeds removed and cut into bite-sized chunks
-6 medium carrots, peeled, cut into bite-sized rounds
-4-5 tablespoons peeled, minced ginger
-1 cans coconut milk, light
-1 can coconut milk, regular
-4 Kaffir lime leaves, if available
-1/2 cup coarsely chopped Thai basil leaves
-Filtered water, at least 4 cups
-Organic olive oil, ¼ cup
-Agave nectar, 1 tablespoon
-Celtic salt, 2 tablespoons or to taste
-1 tsp granulated kelp or granulated kelp with cayenne (Main Seacoast Brand)

Butternut Squash Carrot Ginger SoupDirections:
In a stainless soup pot or a LeCreuset-type enamel soup pot (not non-stick); warm enough olive oil to lightly cover the bottom of the pot (2-3 tablespoons olive oil).  Add the cubed butternut squash and sauté on medium-low heat until squash starts to soften slightly, around 10 minutes.  If squash is sticking, add a little more olive oil Stir frequently!  Add minced ginger and sauté another 3 minutes, and then add the carrots and stir/sauté for another 4-5 minutes.  Then add enough water just to the top of the squash.  Bring to a boil, add the kelp, salt, kaffir lime leaves if you have them, cover and turn down to a low boil for 15-18 minutes (or longer) until the squash is totally soft.  Add cans of coconut milk, the agave, stir, remove top and let cool to room temperature.  (Can put the entire pot in the freezer to cool down if in a rush).

Remove kaffir lime leaves and begin to blend the mixture in a blender. Make sure to only fill blender 1/3 of the way full, then add a ladle at a time to the blender to make sure contents don’t explode out of the blender. Taste for salt and add more if needed.  Once entire batch is blended add chopped Thai basil leaves.  Can garnish with sesame salt! You can put it in portion size containers and freeze it if you like cubed.
